Good Divorce Week – Anger & Emotions

Author:

Jane Auty

Today is day 3 of Good Divorce Week and in this Blog, Jane Auty, one of our Family Solicitors, discusses how to address anger and emotions.

Good Divorce Week is a week long campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of a collaborative approach to separation and divorce in order to ensure that the impact on children is kept to a minimum.

How to address anger and emotions during a divorce

At a time when your emotions will be running high and you are likely feeling angry, upset and confused, it’s right to pause and reflect on how your children may be feeling. It’s understandable and expected for them to also be angry and to be showing emotions and it’s right for them to be able to be open about their feelings and indeed openness should be encouraged.

As with the previous discussions on communication and having a united front it’s important to sit with them and discuss how they are feeling. Make them aware that it’s okay to get angry and upset but also teaching them how to best express their feelings in the right way will make things easier in both the short term and long term. Importantly, they need to know that your separation is not their fault. Spend time to encourage them to talk about their feelings and actively listen to them.
