What is Child Inclusive Mediation

It’s day 3 of Family Mediation Week (20th – 24th January 2020), a week long campaign where we encourage conversations about mediation and raise awareness of mediation and its benefits for separating families. Today we look into the benefits of Child Inclusive Mediation.

Child Inclusive Mediation is really helpful for many families.  The process involves a joint meeting with the parents and mediator, a private meeting between the children and the mediator, and a follow up meeting between the parents and mediator.  This allows the wishes and feelings of the children to be taken into consideration by the parents when thinking about arrangements for the future.

It can really help children to feel listened to in circumstances where they often feel that things are happening in their lives over which they have no control.  It is also a really good way of helping children to see their parents working together in their best interests and the mediator can help children understand what is happening and provide some external reassurances to them.
